**** NEW INFORMATION ****** 4/25/20
PLEASE READ IN FULL: I know this message is extremely long, but it includes important details to ensure we can be most successful in Google Classroom and our next step of our virtual learning process. Thanks!
INTRODUCTION
As I am sure most of you have heard from the calls sent out by the Lakeland School District, our first grade team is excited to announce that we will now be able to continue our first grade education with new lessons and material! Up until now, many of you have been keeping your minds sharp with our optional review and enrichment activities that our first grade team has been providing. Although there were some great activities that kept you learning and growing, we will now be providing new instructional material to continue you on the path of our first grade adventure. Completion of these activities is now required and will be used to determine your fourth quarter grades.
ACCESSING GOOGLE CLASSROOM
Since our first grade team will be monitoring your participation in this instruction, we had to change gears a little bit and decided it would be best to move our instruction from our first grade webpage that you are currently using to Google Classroom. To access this page, please click on the following link https://classroom.google.com which will take you to Google Classroom. If a screen pops up that a class is not found, you can click on where it says “Back to Classes” which will bring you to Google Classroom. In the upper right hand corner you will see a plus sign. Click on this and “Join Class” will appear. Click on “Join Class” and a pop up should appear in the middle of the screen that will ask you to enter a code. Our First Grade Mayfield Campus class code is tgto36s. Once you enter this code, it will take you to the Mayfield Campus First Grade Google classroom.
HOW GOOGLE CLASSROOM WILL WORK
Prior to the Monday of every week, your Mayfield Campus first grade team will work together to offer different lessons in the areas of reading, math, and writing each day from Monday – Thursday. These lessons will require you to complete daily tasks and turn in certain assignments and/or quizzes. Once you are on our Google Classroom page, we highly suggest clicking the tab “Classwork” at the top of the page. This tab will break down the assignments that are required daily. Once you click on one of the assignments for either reading, math, or writing, you can just follow the instructions for that lesson. If there is a need to ask a question about a lesson, there is a spot where it says “private comments” that only the teacher will be able to see and will privately answer your questions. Also if there is a “Turn In” or “Submit” button, please be sure to push this button after a lesson is complete so that our first grade team can keep track of your daily work. All of this information will be included in the lesson directions.
I know this change may be difficult at first, but please know that we will be there to support you. More importantly, we plan on keeping a very similar lesson and assignment schedule from week to week so that students and parents get used to the routines of accessing, completing, and turning in assignments.
GOOGLE MEETS
In addition, your Mayfield Campus first grade teachers will be hosting live Google Meets every Friday from 10:00 AM to 10:30 AM. We will use these Google Meets to serve as an intervention and support time to address any difficulties students may have had with the assignments throughout the week. In order for these live sessions to be most productive and helpful, we ask all students/parents to send an email outlining what content they would like extra help and support with no later than Thursday by 3:00 PM. We will then post on our Bloomz account what topics will be reviewed during that Google Meet Thursday evening or early Friday morning. Email invitations to join the Google Meet will be sent to student email accounts. Students are not required to attend this Google Meet but are more than welcome to join if the review topics being discussed would be beneficial. PLEASE NOTE: the time of this Google Meet is subject to change if we have teacher meetings on that day. We will always keep you posted!
TIPS, SUGGESTIONS, AND NOTES
While we have done our best to outline a virtual learning schedule by suggesting certain activities on certain days, we understand that everyone’s current situation is different and unique. While all of the activities need to be completed, please know that you can complete them when it is convenient for you throughout the week. The only thing we ask is to please follow the order of activities as we have outlined them from day to day.
We also recommend not completing all of the activities at one time back to back. In between content areas, it may be a good idea to take a break, read a book, go outside, play a game, get a snack, complete a specials lesson, etc. Just as we always emphasize the need for “brain breaks” in school, those same breaks are needed at home as well. It may be even more important now to give your child’s eyes and mind a break from the computer screen.
CONCLUSION
As we move forward, our first grade team understands that Google Classroom will be new to many of you. Please do not hesitate to email us at [email protected] or [email protected] or message us on our Bloomz accounts if you have difficulty accessing anything, need clarification on directions for any of the activities, or need help with the topics presented. Our first grade team will be here to help and support you in any way we can.
P.S.: If you log into Google Classroom prior to next Monday, please note that our first grade assignments are still being created and uploaded at this time. Our first grade team has been working hard and will have everything ready to go by Monday. Thanks!

First Grade Writing Activities for the week of April 13th
Our students were always working hard writing in their daily journals. The students followed the same weekly structure and were writing at least 3 - 5 sentences on each topic. Students may choose to write on these topics or they can have a free write if they do not like the topic. The following are the daily journal topics to write about this week:
We also always had a Free Write Friday if your child wishes to continue writing. Have fun writing!
BONUS ACTIVITIES!!!
Have you ever wanted to visit ZooAmerica? Now you can from the comfort of your own home! Located in Hershey, Pennsylvania and attached to the world famous Hershey Park, ZooAmerica North American Wildlife Park is home to more than 200 animals native to the continent of North America. Just like our school has been closed, ZooAmerica is closed too. Even though we cannot go and visit ZooAmerica right now, the zookeepers are bringing the zoo to you! Each day from Monday – Friday, staff members and zookeepers from ZooAmerica will be doing live behind-the-scenes visits with some of their animals through the official ZooAmerica Facebook page. Each day at 11:00 AM, you can see and learn about the featured animal(s) of the day. Can’t get on their page at 11:00 AM? It’s okay-you can view these animal experiences whenever it is convenient for you. No Facebook account? No problem-you can still view these daily experiences by visiting their Facebook page at the following link: https://www.facebook.com/ZooAmerica. If you do have a Facebook account and are able to view the live presentation, you can post questions for the zookeepers in the comments of the video. Who knows? Maybe your question can get answered! Up to this point, ZooAmerica has provided up close access to animals such as a lynx, reptiles, owls, bobcats, falcons, alligators, opossums, lizards, mountain lions, rabbits, and more! I can’t wait to see what animals they will show us next! To learn more about ZooAmerica and the animals that live at their zoo, you can also visit their website at https://www.zooamerica.com. I hope you enjoy this experience!
